Standardized Testing Information

Spring Time brings Test Time to Darby Elementary School in Sasebo , Japan . During the spring of 2005, all students in grades 3 through 6 took the Terra Nova Achievement Test. Fourth graders also took the Balanced Assessment in Mathematics, the Communication Arts Performance Assessment and the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Here is some information on how our students did on these assessments.

Terra Nova

In March 2005, all students in grades three, four, five and six in DoDEA schools had an opportunity to complete the Terra Nova Assessment of Academic Performance. Terra Nova is a performance-based achievement test that measures the student’s knowledge and skills. It is a norm-referenced test which compares student performance to the performance of a norm sample of peers at the same grade level.

The National Percentile Score: Percentile scores are different from percentages. A percentile score of 50 falls in the center of the bell shaped curve and indicates the student has acquired appropriate skills for his or her grade level. If you visualize a line of 100 students, a student in the 52 percentile would have 48 students ahead him or her and 51 students behind.

Percentile scores range from 1-99%tile. Appropriate grade level performance can range from low average (25%) to high average (75%). The below average performance range is 1-24%tile. Above average performance on this test is 76-99%tile.

Balanced Assessment in Mathematics (BAM) 4th GRADE

In the Spring of 2005, all fourth grade students at Darby Elementary School took the Balanced Assessment in Mathematics (BAM). The BAM is a criterion-referenced test. This means that student performance is evaluated in terms of how an individual student masters specific standards. We are very pleased to inform you that 95% of our Darby fourth graders were “at standard or above” (Level 3 or Level 4) on the BAM mathematics assessment. All remaining students “partially met the standard”. No student in the fourth grade fell into the “Below Standard Category”.

Communication Arts Performance Assessment (CAPA)
4th GRADE

In the Spring of 2005, all fourth grade students at Darby Elementary School took the Terra Nova: Communication Arts Performance Assessment CAPA). The CAPA is a criterion-referenced test. This means that student performance is evaluated in terms of how an individual student masters specific standards. Darby students performed very well on this communication assessment, with 78% “at standard or above” on the CAPA. All remaining students “partially met the standard”. No student in the fourth grade fell into the “Below Standard Category” on this assessment.

National Assessment of Educational Progress
4th GRADE

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is commonly known as the Nation’s Report Card. NAEP is sponsored by the US Department of Education and is designed to test students’ knowledge in subjects commonly taught in school. Students from every state in the USA and Department of Defense Schools take NAEP tests.

The 2005 NAEP tested reading, mathematics, and science, with individual students only testing in one subject for no more than 90 minutes. Results from this test are reported at the state and DoDEA-wide level. Results for individual students or individual schools are not reported.

(Individual participation in NAEP is completely voluntary.)
